Orthostatic Hypotension

Orthostatic Hypotension, also known as postural hypotension, is a condition where the body’s blood pressure drops significantly when you stand up too quickly. This condition is a form of low blood pressure and can cause an individual to feel lightheaded, dizzy and even faint. Orthostatic Hypotension can be quite mild, lasting for only a few minutes, or it can be a long-lasting condition that indicates more serious issues at hand.

Symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension

The most common symptom of this condition is experiencing lightheadedness or dizziness after standing up or lying down. The additional symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension include:

  • Blurry vision

  • Weakness

  • Fainting

  • Confusion

  • Feeling nauseous

  • Chest pain

  • Fatigue

Diagnosis and Treatment

If the doctor believes you have Orthostatic Hypotension, he/she will likely check your blood pressure while you are sitting, standing or lying down. In addition, a physical examination will likely take place to determine the cause of the hypotension. Other tests may be conducted, including:

  • Blood test

  • Holter monitor

  • Electrocardiogram

  • Stress test

  • Echocardiogram (an ultrasound examination of your heart)

If a specific type of medication is causing the Orthostatic Hypotension condition, the doctor may adjust your dosage or prescribe you a different medication. One of the most common and easiest ways to treat this condition is to adjust your everyday life. These changes may include the following:

  • Any time you are dehydrated, ensure you drink a lot of water.

  • Limit or completely eliminate alcohol from your lifestyle.

  • Practice standing up more slowly when getting out of a chair or bed.

  • Wear compression stockings that help apply pressure to the legs and stimulate blood circulation.
