Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is commonly used to treat stomach and esophageal problems, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to relieve symptoms of these conditions, such as heartburn.

There is not a generic version of Dexilant currently available in the United States or from our Canadian Pharmacy. However, dexlansoprazole is available from India now and can help you save over 85%. 

What is Dexilant and How It Works?

Dexilant is a brand-name prescription medication of dexlansoprazole, which belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Dexilant helps shut down pumps in your stomach that produce acid to help digest your food.

Medications within a class of medications work the same way in your body. Dexilant is approved for use in adults and in children ages 12 years and older.

What Are the Strengths and Forms of Brand Name Dexilant?

The key to Dexilant‘s timed release of medication is its Dual Delayed Release technology, which combines two different types of granules in one pill.

Dexilant begins to deliver the first release of medication within an hour of taking your pill. Then, around 4–5 hours later, a second release of dexlansoprazole medication arrives. The link between two releases and therapeutic benefit is not known.

Dexlansoprazole MR is a modified-release formulation of dexlansoprazole, a specific version or enantiomer of lansoprazole, which uses an innovative dual delayed release (DDR) technology designed to prolong the time dexlansoprazole remains effective in your body.  This is intended to provide extended duration of acid suppression with once-daily dosing.

The DDR formulation uses different types of granules with pH-dependent dissolution profiles that release dexlansoprazole at different times and over a longer period.  So, for example, a portion of the medication could be released in the highly acidic environment of the stomach and another portion released in your intestines where the environment is not so acidic.

How Much Does Generic and Brand Name Dexilant Cost?

The brand name Dexilant 60mg is not cheap in the United States. The average retail price of brand name Dexilant (60 mg) is around $8 per capsule (source from wellrx.com, July 15, 2022).

Fortunately, there are ways to save.

Does Dexilant Have Side Effects?

Studies of more than 4500 adults showed that Dexilant had a low occurrence of side effects. The most common side effects in adults were diarrhea (4.8%), stomach pain (4.0%), nausea (2.9%), common cold (1.9%), vomiting (1.6%), and gas (1.6%). All of these side effects were seen in less than 5% of patients.

The most common side effects in children age 12 to 17 years, were headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, and pain or swelling (inflammation) in the mouth, nose, or throat.

It is not known if Dexilant is safe and effective in children under age 12 years. Dexilant is not effective for symptoms of GERD in children under 1 year of age.

In adults, persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, could be GERD, also known as acid reflux disease (ARD). Prescription Dexilant capsules are used in adults for 4 weeks to treat heartburn related to GERD, for up to 8 weeks to heal acid-related damage to the lining of the esophagus, and for up to 6 months to continue healing of EE and relief of heartburn. Most damage (erosions) heals in 4 to 8 weeks.
