Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It develops when the immune system ends up attacking the myelin sheath, which is the protective layer surrounding the nerve fibers, causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

MS causes inflammation, lesions, and scar tissue – depending on where the scarring occurs, some individuals may experience difficulty with muscle control, speech, vision, and balance.

The symptoms and signs of MS often vary between each person. Severity can range from year to year, month to month and, sometimes, daily. However, two of the most common symptoms people face are fatigue and difficulty with mobility, especially walking.

There is currently no cure for MS. Available treatments can speed up recovery from attacks, modify the course of the disease and manage symptoms.

Symptoms and Signs Of MS

The symptoms of MS can vary greatly between patients depending on the location of affected nerve, fibers; however, the most common symptoms individuals face include:

  • Weakness and numbness in the limbs on one side of the body

  • Tremors, lack of coordination in the limbs and odd neck movements that may feel like electric shocks or sensations

  • Blurry vision, double vision, complete or partial vision loss, usually in one eye at a time

  • Slurred speech

  • Fatigue

  • Tingling and pain in parts of the body

  • Problems with sexual, bladder and bowel functions
