Albuterol (salbutamol) is the generic ingredient in brand name inhalers such as Proventil HFA, Ventolin HFA, ProAir HFA and ProAir RespiClick.

Albuterol (salbutamol) is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and increases air flow to the lungs.  Albuterol (salbutamol) works quickly and is also called a “rescue inhaler”.  Albuterol (salbutamol) inhalers are frequently used on an as needed basis versus a regular dosing schedule.

Albuterol (salbutamol) is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease.  Albuterol (salbutamol) is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.

Albuterol (salbutamol) inhalation is for use in adults and children who are at least 4 years old.

Albuterol (salbutamol) inhalation may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the available dosage forms and strengths?

Albuterol and salbutamol are the same medicine.  90mcg of albuterol is equal to 90mcg of salbutamol.

So why are albuterol (salbutamol) inhaler strengths listed as 90mcg in the USA and 100mcg in Canada?  The answer is that in the USA, the dose is measured at the mouthpiece at 90mcg albuterol (salbutamol) per actuation.  In Canada the dose is measured at the valve at 100mcg albuterol (salbutamol) per actuation.

Albuterol (salbutamol) I s available in the following dosage forms:

  • Powder

  • Solution

  • Suspension

  • Aerosol Powder

How should you use Albuterol (salbutamol) (Proventil, Ventolin, ProAir)?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.

You may need to prime your inhaler device before the first use. Your medicine comes with directions for priming if needed.

You may also need to shake your medicine just before each use.

Follow all medication instructions very carefully.

Do not allow a young child to use albuterol inhalation devices without help from an adult.

The usual dose of albuterol (salbutamol) is 2 inhalations every 4 to 6 hours. To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm, use 2 inhalations 15 to 30 minutes before exercise or exposure to a “trigger”. The effects of albuterol (salbutamol) inhalation should last about 4 to 6 hours.

Seek medical attention if you think your asthma medications are not working as well. An increased need for medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack.

Use the dose counter on your inhaler device and get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine completely. Always use the new inhaler device provided with your refill. Do not float a medicine canister in water to see if it is empty.

Follow all product instructions on how to clean your inhaler device and mouthpiece. Do not try to clean or take apart the ProAir RespiClick inhaler device.

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Store at room temperature; away from moisture, heat, and light.

Keep the medicine canister away from open flame or high heat, such as in a car on a hot day. The canister may explode if it gets too hot. Do not puncture or burn an empty inhaler canister.
