Description

Premarin is a medicine containing a mixture of estrogen hormones. Premarin is the brand name of that medicine and belongs to a group of drugs known as hormone replacement therapy, or HRT.

It is used to treat moderate to severe hot flashes, changes in and around the vagina, and other symptoms of menopause or low amounts of estrogen (hypoestrogenism). This medicine is also used to prevent osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) after menopause.

During menopause, your body produces less estrogen. This can cause symptoms such as "hot flashes" or dryness of the vagina. Premarin works like the hormones produced by the ovaries before menopause. When given during or after menopause, it can help control the symptoms.

Premarin can also be used to treat women before menopause if their ovaries do not make enough estrogen naturally.

What are the available dosage forms and strengths?

How should you take Premarin (Conjugated estrogens)?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Take Premarin exactly as directed.

The usual dose is one tablet every day.

Your doctor will aim to give you the lowest dose for the shortest time to treat your symptoms as necessary while minimizing the risk of side effects.

Take your tablet at the same time each day as this will help you remember to take your medicine.

If you are not already taking a HRT product or if you are taking an HRT product that does not give you a monthly bleed you may start your Premarin at any convenient time.

If you are changing from an HRT product that gives you a monthly bleed, start Premarin the day after you finish the course of the previous product, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember and then carry on taking the remaining tablets at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.

Missed tablets may cause a short period of light bleeding in women who have not had a hysterectomy.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Who should not take Premarin (Conjugated estrogens)?

You should not use Premarin if you are allergic to it or any of its inactive ingredients. You should not use Premarin if you have:

•   unusual vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor;

•   liver disease;

•   a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot;

•   an increased risk of having ​blood clots​ due to a heart problem or a hereditary blood

• disorder; or 

•   a history of hormone-related cancer, or cancer of the breast, uterus/cervix, or vagina.

Do not use Premarin if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment.

Using this medicine can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. You are even more at risk if you have ​high blood pressure​, ​diabetes​, high ​cholesterol​, if you are ​overweight​, or if you smoke.

Estrogen should not be used to prevent heart disease, stroke, or dementia.

What to avoid while taking Premarin?

Avoid smoking. It can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack while using Premarin.

Grapefruit may interact with conjugated estrogens and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid the use of grapefruit products.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking Premarin?

Tell your doctor if you have ever had or may be:

• unusual vaginal bleeding that has not been checked by a doctor; 

•  liver disease;

•  a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot;

•  an increased risk of having blood clots due to a heart problem or a hereditary            blood disorder; or

•  a history of hormone-related cancer, or cancer of the breast, uterus/cervix, or    vagina; or

• pregnant or breastfeeding

What other medicines interact with Premarin (Conjugated estrogens)?

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

• an anticonvulsant (used to treat epilepsy e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine)

• an anti-infective e.g. used to treat tuberculosis (rifampicin, rifabutin) or HIV (nevirapine,

• efavirenz, ritonavir and nelfinavir) 

• other antibiotics or antifungal medicines (e.g. erythromycin, clarithromycin,ketoconazole, itraconazole)

• a herbal preparation such as St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

• dexamethasone (a corticosteroid)

This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with conjugated estrogens, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

What are the possible side effects of Premarin?

Get emergency medical help if you have ​signs of an allergic reaction​: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

         Call your doctor at once if you have:

• heart attack symptoms--chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating;

• signs of a stroke-sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance​;

• a sudden large rise in blood pressure-headache, tiredness dizziness;

• signs of a blood clot-sudden vision loss, stabbing chest pain, feeling short of

• breath, coughing up blood, pain or warmth in one or both legs;

• signs of an allergic reaction-rash, itching, shortness of breath difficulty breathing and a swollen face;

• swelling or tenderness in your stomach;

• jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);

• memory problems, confusion, unusual behavior;

• unusual vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain;

• a lump in your breast                                                                                                 Common side effects may include: 

• nausea, gas, stomach pain; 

• headache, back pain; 

•  depression, sleep problems (insomnia); 

• breast pain; or 

• vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstrual periods, breakthrough bleeding.
